2. Do you have any suggestions for future programmes?

Dick Lee; More opera; Dick Lee and friends; TAG theatre; Perhaps some drama; Musical group from beyond Europe; Talk or outing on Scottish painters; Repeat of Norwegian (Greig) evening; More drama; Some dance please; Jazz again; Dance, modern or ballet; One or two ‘unusuals’ – consult EMS tours book e.g. Cambridge Buskers; Would welcome small choral group – maybe a quartet?; Cappella Nova, The Cambridge Singers in St Michael’s, Tunnell Trust musicians; Kurt Veil theatre songs, Jazz and cabaret, Ludus Baroque; More singers rather than instrumentalists, no modern music, less string quartets, Guilbert & Sullivan evening, Mozart evening; Mozart, Schubert, vocal quartets and duets, Jazz Dick Lee; The mix is always good – perhaps more vocal and the occasional non-soprano; Drama;

3. Should we plan to have a special programme to attract families and young people?

One event, yes; Yes but the arts are a minority interest difficult to attract people if they don’t have underlying interest; Perhaps yes; No; Means special performers, programmes, and times. Difficult? ; Yes; Difficult; Could do; No; After the success of Hansel and Gretel, one a season perhaps; Yes;

Any suggestions?

Jazz; Find out from school music department what interests young people; Some sort of workshop; A short programme – c. 1 hour Competitions for kids – quiz sheets? Food?; Event for children run by RSNO with a few tickets for Academy pupils?; An evening where a musician – possibly pianist introduces a programme about one aspect of music – e.g. animals in music, and plays excerpts - charge a family something like £5 for the night – let the children sit at the front – they are more likely to stay interested if they can see what’s happening; Ballet; What about a Christmas concert with pies and mulled wine for the family with popular Xmas themes like the RSNO do in the Usher hall at Xmas e.g. Mozart, Viennese etc. We could maybe have audience participation with some carols to sing included;

Would you be able to help with this?

Six positive responses.

5. Any comments about any of the venues?

School seats etc. hard; Seats are rather uncomfortable; The school halls are better than they were a few years ago; Existing halls in Linlithgow not that attractive, hard seats a problem; Concerts in St Michael’s Church spoiled by hard seats; Uncomfy seats in most of them; One is limited to venues depending on expected size of audience. There is no doubt that Linlithgow is sadly lacking a concert hall venue; I go for sound quality, and this can vary for each depending on what is being played or sung. E.g. Academy good for opera, Kirk unsurpassable for orchestral or choral; In fact they are all very good and have easy parking and good heating; Good car parking at most of them. Seats comfortable at most places. Crush hall in Kirk Hall cramped at intervals; Husband finds Kirk Hall chairs most uncomfortable; None of the venues is particularly exciting, but this is a local organisation fulfilling a local need and there is no suitable venue in the area; Can’t see in St Michael’s, too hot in the Kirk hall; Contrary to popular opinion I don’t think St Michaels Church is good for orchestral playing. There is too much echo which affects the crispness of the sound. The location is cold and draughty and the view is not good but against this the venue is beautiful and has much character;

6. What do you prefer at the interval?

9. How can we attract new members?

Advertise at other musical venues; Advertise; Bring a friend along to at least one concert; Better advertising, perhaps at start of season. Attempt to get away from ‘stuffy’ image; More targeted publicity – members of other organisations with ‘arts’ focus e.g. Film Society, Folk Club, Linlithgow Players; A strong effort on all music teachers in Linlithgow (including peripatetic). They should all attend regularly and bring their pupils; Carefully targeted publicity?; By maintaining a good interesting programme; Mail drop in Linlithgow, announcements in schools; More publicity in newspapers like the Scotsman, Evening News; More advertising. General article about Arts Guild in Gazette. Crit in Gazette less technical – make it more informal and friendly – inject some humour; By word of mouth – get each member to introduce a friend; Alternative subscription system; We should include items with more popular appeal in our programme together with the ‘hogh-brow’ stuff. Lots of people don’t realise that classical music is enjoyable but will learn to appreciate it if we can get them to come along;

10.Should there be some incentive to bring along someone new?

Yes; Yes; No;

How could this be done?

£5 off the membership fee; First event of season (hopefully a good one) could be bring a friend for half price; Bring one get one free; Possibly a teacher’s sponsorship/subsidy; The incentive lies in the programme – we have brought friends when we have thought the programme would appeal to them;

11. Could you arrange for a poster to go up somewhere? (especially if you live out of town)

Ten positive responses.

12. Is transport to and from the concert sometimes a problem?

There were no requests for transport

Could you provide transport to and from concerts?

Five positive responses.

Are there any other comments you would like the committee to consider?

It is important to have the performers up on at least a small platform and well lit; Flower arrangements also contribute to the setting; I think the posters should be more eye catching. All the events should be on the front cover of the programme to draw people’s attention – like we used to do; The post concert party could easily be opened up to all and sundry at a small charge in certain situations but particularly in Steven Osborne’s case as there may be lots of people who would like to congratulate him etc.;

End of responses.
